Resume & Cover Letter: Self-Assessment

My first assignment was the resume and cover letter. Writing the cover letter was new to me because I had never written a cover letter before. I had completed a resume before this course. I started by researching what makes a good cover letter, reading samples from other students, and understanding its purpose—to introduce myself to potential employers and highlight why I was the right fit for the job. After gathering some insights, I outlined the key points I wanted to include: an opening that grabbed attention, a brief introduction about myself and my background, highlighting relevant skills and experiences, and a closing that expressed my excitement for the opportunity and willingness to further discuss my qualifications. Next, I customized each cover letter to the specific job I was applying for, ensuring that I addressed the requirements and qualifications listed in the job description. This meant customizing the content to showcase how my experiences aligned with what the employer was looking for. As I began drafting the cover letter, I referred back to my resume to ensure consistency in the information presented. I aimed for a clear and concise writing style, avoiding repetition of details already mentioned in my resume. Overall, while writing my first cover letter was difficult, breaking the task down into manageable steps and asking for guidance along the way helped me successfully navigate through the process.
