Final Self-Assessment Essay

This semester, I find myself reflecting on my journey as a writer and how my perceptions of writing have evolved.  My understanding of writing and literary skills has changed significantly, especially through the “Writing for Science” course. Initially, I considered writing as a tool for conveying information through words. However, the course has been transformative in changing my understanding of writing’s capabilities. Nowadays, I see writing as a complex and multifaceted kind of communication that extends far beyond just using words. Through the exploration of various literary techniques, including the strategic use of color, word placement, and imagery, I’ve come to recognize the depth and complexity inherent in effective writing. I have used a variety of linguistic and visual components to create inspiring and powerful written communication.

The first assignment of the semester was the resume and cover letter. Writing the cover letter was a new experience for me, as I had never written one before. I began by researching what constitutes an effective cover letter, reading samples from other students, and understanding its purpose: to introduce myself to potential employers and highlight why I was the right fit for the job.

To achieve this, I outlined the key points I wanted to include: an engaging opening, a brief introduction about myself and my background, highlighting relevant skills and experiences, and a closing that expressed my enthusiasm for the opportunity. Customizing each cover letter to the specific job I was applying for, I addressed the requirements and qualifications listed in the job description, showcasing how my experiences aligned with what the employer sought. This assignment significantly enhanced my strategies for reading, drafting, revising, editing, and self-assessment, fulfilling course learning objectives 2 and 3.

The rhetorical analysis assignment was critical. I chose to analyze the video “Why Scrolling on Social Media is Addictive” by the Washington Post, which explores the contemporary issue of social media addiction and its impact on mental health. Through this assignment, I improved my ability to read, draft, revise, and edit my work. My first draft was broad and unfocused, but through multiple revisions and feedback from peers, I refined my argument to be more coherent and compelling. This process demonstrated my ability to formulate and articulate a stance in my writing, aligning with course learning objectives 4 and 6. Additionally, this assignment helped me enhance my source use practices, including evaluating, integrating, quoting, paraphrasing, summarizing, synthesizing, analyzing, and citing sources, which are crucial skills for any writer.

Writing the literature review was another significant journey. This assignment required me to synthesize information from various studies and sources, presenting a comprehensive overview of the impact of technology on adolescents. By incorporating diverse viewpoints, I acknowledged and drew on linguistic differences as valuable resources, aligning with course learning objective 1.

Through careful reading and analysis of each source, I was able to extract key insights and integrate them into the review effectively. Drafting and revising multiple versions allowed me to refine my arguments and ensure clarity. This process highlighted the importance of balancing academic strictness with accessibility, fulfilling course learning objectives 3, 5, and 8. The literature review also reinforced my understanding of the dynamic and iterative nature of writing, further evolving my perception of what writing is.

The collaborative children’s book project was a unique and creatively demanding assignment. Our group decided to create a children’s book on the impact of technology on adolescent minds, which required us to simplify complex concepts and present them in an engaging and accessible way. This project involved adapting our knowledge for a younger audience, fulfilling course learning objectives 3 and 4. Finding a balance between educational value and an engaging narrative was challenging. We had to make careful decisions about the book’s plot and themes, ensuring they were age-appropriate. Collaborating with my peers, we continually negotiated our writing goals and adjusted the rhetorical situation to effectively convey our message. This process allowed us to explore multimodal composing, using illustrations to complement the text and enhance the narrative, aligning with course learning objective 5.

The final component of our collaborative project was the presentation. This presentation required us to deliver the main ideas of our children’s book into concise and engaging slides. This task helped me develop a thorough understanding of the material and the ability to communicate complex ideas effectively, fulfilling course learning objectives 4 and 7. Delivering the presentation allowed me to articulate key points and engage with the audience, demonstrating my collaborative skills, writing proficiency, and ability to communicate effectively.

Reflecting on this semester, I am proud of the progress I have made. Each assignment has contributed to my development, helping me achieve the course learning objectives and transforming my perception of writing. I now see writing as a dynamic process that involves continuous refinement and adaptation to different audiences and contexts.

By acknowledging linguistic differences, enhancing my reading and writing strategies, and engaging in collaborative and multimodal composing, I have grown as a writer and a communicator. This semester has laid a solid foundation for my future academic and professional pursuits, and I am excited to continue building on the skills and insights I have gained.
